Patient undergoes surgery for Ovarian Carcinoma (Ovarian Cancer)

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Our 68 year old patient, Alice volunteered to share her surgical experience with Dr. Anthony Quartell a few weeks ago at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J.  She explained that she would want other women going through the same circumstances to know that- with the help from the right physician, there is light at the end of the tunnel.  Alice was diagnosed with ovarian cancer upon the results of her pelvic ultrasound ordered by Dr. Quartell within a few days of her exam in the office.  The patient came to the office complaining of feeling bloated all of the time, with frequent urination and bowel problems.  Upon examining her, Dr. Quartell suspected an ovarian mass /  tumor and ordered an ultrasound to be done right away.  The results indicated the presence of ovarian cancer and therefore warranted a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salgino-oopherectomy.  The surgery was successful and the patient was sent on for follow up care with a good prognosis for recovery.

Risk Assessment for Lynch Syndrome and Herediatry Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Have you or any family members ever been tested for hereditary cancer? Have you or any family member had uterine  or endometrial cancer before age 50?  Have you or any family member had colorectal cancer before age 50?  Have you or any familymember had ovarian cancer?  Have you or any family member had two or more lynch syndrome cancers (colon, ovarian, stomach, ureter/renal pelvis, biliary tract, small bowel, pancreas, brain or sebaceous adenoma)?  Have you or a family member had breast cancer at age 50 or younger?  These are some of the questions asked of our female patients upon a visit to our office when screening for potential future testing (Braca testing) if the responses warrant it.  It is imperative that females become proactive with their own medical care and not just the necessary medical care for their loved ones, by obtaining  preventive care services each year and as needed.

Anthony C. Quartell, MD & Associates (Four Physicians, a Nurse Practitioner, 2 RNs and other medical personnel at our location) serves Essex County, Morris County, Union County, Sussex County, Hudson County and surrounding areas.
