Follow up is an important step toward good health.

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Although many patients are good about making preventive care appointments and problem appointments when they have concerns or issues to address, they often fall short on the follow up step for further testing or evaluation as per their healthcare provider’s instructions.  For example, if a patient comes to the physician complaining of chronic pelvic pain and the physician orders a gynecological ultrasound as part of the diagnostic process and after discussing those results the patient is instructed to return in 3 months for a follow up scan, it is expected that the patient will make that appointment.  However, many times upon reviewing patient files, our nurses will find that the patient has yet to be re-tested and consequently, the nurses will call the patient several times or even as a last effort to remind the patient of her duty to take care of herself first- which is a difficult thing to do for many women who are mothers, wives, daughters, sisters first, our nurses will even send out letters to urge the patient to follow up on her own health care.  Our providers and nurses  do not stop until they have exhausted every effort to get the patient to follow up on her own health needs.  In this busy day and age when many women are stretched thin already, it seems harder to find time to follow up on their own health needs but putting it off can only have negative consequences for everyone close to them.

Patients thank nurses for the warm and personalized care received during their pregnancies.

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Many female patients who have entered the doors of our office have thanked our nurses for the geniune care and support given to them over the months spent as an obstetrical patient in our practice.  Whether it is the patient’s first pregnancy or fourth, our nurses provide the most thorough and personalized care as they answer all of our patients’ questions and concerns throughout the term of the pregnancy.  Typically, our nurses answer a minimum of 25 phonecalls a day ranging from common questions about taking cold medicines, to more complicated questions about discomfort, pain or even bleeding.  Between our Nurse Practitioner, Marisa and our two registered nurses; Kelly and Marion, no question goes unanswered and no patient feels ignored.  Our nurses believe in treating patients the way they would want their own mothers or daughters treated and it is evident in the continual thanks they receive every day from these grateful patients who become part of “our family” as they return to our office over and over, long after their babies are born.

Patients praise Dr. Anthony Quartell for the wonderful prenatal care they received

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Upon her post partum visit with Dr. Anthony Quartell yesterday at his Livingston Office, Andrea gave thanks to Dr. Quartell and his staff for the wonderful care she feels she received during her pregnancy. ” I came to see Dr. Quartell after I complained to a good friend of mine about the obstetrician who delivered my first child two years ago.  My friend insisted I see Dr. Quartell since he delivered her  three children and she had felt he was attentive, caring and thorough in handling her pregnancies.  After taking her advice, I can tell you that she was right.  Not only did I feel safe under his care, but his nurses and nurse practitioner, as well as the rest of the staff , treated me as if I was their only patient and I am well aware that is not the case.  I truly had a wonderful experience and would not hesitate to refer him to anyone looking for the best care possible. ”

Ectopic Pregnancy and the Laparoscopy

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

A pregancy that occurs in the fallopian tube as opposed to the uterus which is the normal location for a pregnancy to occur, is known as an ectopic pregnancy.  Should a patient have pain in her lower abdomen during pregancy, the physician may evaluate her for an ectopic pregnancy.  The pregnancy could rupture the tube possibly causing abdominal bleeding.  Should this happen, the patient may require surgery.  This surgery could be performed through an instrument called the laparoscope.  During the surgery, a small cut near the navel allows for the insertion of the laparoscope, along with another instrument inserted through a second cut  allowing  for the organs to be moved for a clear view.  Laparoscopic surgery warrants a shorter hospital stay, smaller incisions and a shorter recovery than open abdominal surgery.  Anthony C. Quartell, MD is a board certified obstetrician gynecologist, who has been in practice for more than 35 years.  Appointed to the Clinical Advisory Board for the American Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery in 2010 and as the Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., he has performed countless laparoscopic surgeries with successul outcomes.  Anthony C. Chromosomal Disorders in Pregnancy

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Even though sometimes problems with the fetus’s chromosomes could be inherited, more than likely they could be the result of a problem with the egg or sperm as they were being created.  There are several causes for chromosomal disorders, such as an extra or missing chromosome or peice of chromosome.   For instance, in Down Syndrome, which is a well known disorder,   instead of two number 21 chromosomes, newborns with down syndrom have three of them.  There are other types of chromosomal disorders, such as fragile X syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome (in males)or Turner Syndrome( in females) which are tested for at specific times of pregancy.  Many couples prefer to seek counseling even before becoming pregnant.  Anthony C. Quartell, MD & Associates serves the areas of Livingston, NJ, Short Hills, N.J., Millburn, N.J. , Florham Park, N.J., East Hanover, N.J. and surrounding areas.

Weight Gain in Pregnancy

Monday, May 9th, 2011

The average increase in weight that a female gains during pregnancy usually ranges from about 25- 35 pounds.  This weight gain consists of many different areas, which includes the baby- usually weighing around 7-8 pounds, the placenta, the uterus, the amniotic fluid and of course increased weight from body fluids, blood, and the breasts.  Usually there is an increased weight gain resulting from retained water as well.  This is all normal weight gain and to be expected.  However, it is important to eat a healthy diet consisting of proteins, vitamins, minerals, fats and carbohydrates in order for you and your growing baby to remain healthy.  The poplar belief that “you are eating for two” is completely valid, as your healthy diet provides the energy needed for your baby’s growth and for your own health and energy.  It will also be easier to shed the extra weight gain later, after the baby’s birth, during the post partum period.  For an appointment, pregnant patients should call Anthony C. Quartell, MD & Associates, serving the areas of Livingston, N.J., West Orange, N.J., Verona, N.J., and the Caldwells.

Can it be a miscarriage?

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Although bleeding during pregnancy is a common sign of miscarriage, it does not mean a miscarriage is immanent.  It can also be normal for a pregnant woman to spot or have some bleeding during pregnancy and still have a healthy baby.  Bleeding during the early stages of pregnancy is referred to as threatened miscarriage and consequently needs to be evaluated and monitored by the physician.  Sometimes there will be mild cramping or even a low backache with bleeding, which could be an indication of a miscarriage.  It is important to call your physician with the following symptoms:  spotting or bleeding even if there is no pain, bleeding with pain (could feel like menstrual cramping or low back ache), a gush of fluid with no pain or bleeding (could be the amniotic sac breaking).  Anthony C. Quartell,MD & Associates serves Livingston, NJ, Millburn, N.J., West Orange, N.J. and surrounding areas.
